Antonio Guiteras was a Cuban revolutionary and politician who played a significant role in the overthrow of the government of Gerardo Machado and the rise of Fidel Castro's communist regime. Guiteras was born on November 26, 1906, in Batabanó, Cuba, and studied law at the University of Havana. He became a member of the Cuban Communist Party in the early 1930s and later founded the Socialist Youth in 1934.
In 1933, Guiteras played a crucial role in the anti-government uprising that resulted in the fall of Machado's regime. He organized the Popular Socialist Party and served as its leader until 1935 when he was forced into exile in Mexico due to the government crackdown on left-wing political groups.
Guiteras returned to Cuba in 1937 and became involved in the student movement, fighting against the dictatorship of President Fulgencio Batista. In 1939, he founded the Revolutionary Directorate, a group of young revolutionaries committed to overthrowing the Batista regime.
During the early days of the Cuban Revolution, Guiteras served as the Minister of the Interior under Castro's government. However, he was killed in a confrontation with the police on May 8, 1935, while attempting to launch an uprising against the Batista government. He is widely regarded as a martyr of the Cuban Revolution and a hero of the Cuban people.
